Tom Florio Exiting Condé Nast
(NEW YORK) Mon dieu! Condé Nast has just announced that star publisher Tom Florio will exit the company at the end of June. The senior vice president of publishing, most famous for his leadership of Vogue, was just promoted to the SVP title in November 2009, when he hired Susan Plagemann away from Marie Claire to become Vogue's publisher. Florio's successor has not yet been named. "I want to be CEO of my own company," Florio told the Wall Street Journal, adding, "we already have a really good CEO." He claims that he has not yet decided what his next move will be.
Good thing S.I. has Carol Smith over at 4 Times Square. The former publishing powerhouse at Elle is biding her time (for now) at Bon Appetit and Gourmet, but surely her fashion clients will come in handy now that Florio is leaving the building.
A long-term veteran of Condé Nast, Florio joined the company in the eighties at Condé Nast Traveller, where he rose through the ranks to become publisher. In 1994, he moved over to The New Yorker (he was replaced by Richard Beckman at Traveller) and left for GQ in 1998. In 2002, S.I. Newhouse moved him over to Vogue. In addition to overseeing all publishing functions for Condé Nast's flagship fashion title, Florio also masterminded the launches of Teen Vogue, Men's Vogue, and Vogue Living.
