Today in Tonchi: Report from inside the T-renches
(NEW YORK) So how was Tonchi's first rendez-vous at W? Both winning and reassuring, by several accounts. The dapper new Condé chef held a meeting with staff at 11 a.m. yesterday, and began by professing his admiration for W's legendary visuals. He joked about only working at single-letter titles and recalled his salad days in the industry, when he went to the Tents and angled to meet Patrick McCarthy, whom he admired. "He's very charming," marvelled one witness. Tonchi professed his love for print magazines, but was clear that he will focus on the web and building the brand's presence online. And attention, writers! Tonchi first focus is the stories. After all, shouldn't l'ecriture be as award-winning as all of Dennis Freedman's fashion and Eddie Lieda's design? At any rate, staffers are breathing easier. "He said he looks forward to meeting with all of us individually," said a junior fashionette. Sans doute.
