New York Fall 2011: Nicholas K.
(NEW YORK) The rustic life. That was the fall 2011 inspiration for Christopher and Nicholas Kunz, the dynamic sibling duo behind Nicholas K. “I went a little more woodsy and bohemian gypsy but I wanted to keep it focused and maintain our downtown element too,” described Nicholas backstage at her men’s and women’s runway show on February 10. “When you think of woodsy, you think of conservative cable knit sweaters. It was about trying to make that cable knit sweater cooler by adding asymmetrical drapes and finger holes and oversized hoods.” Well, consider her mission accomplished. Nods to the outdoors were found in fireside-ready knits in noir and crème accented with knotted leather buttons, rustic leather bombers, wrapped and faded flannels, olive parkas (perfect for roughing it), and hunter green velvet knickers. Vintage platforms were added in the mix to top off the woodland aesthetic. Most surprising in the collection were the practical two-in-one functions of many womenswear pieces. Skirts, tied in front, transformed into A-line cropped shirts and scarves became detachable hoods. Pragmatic and chic.
