Golden Globes Rundown: Damsels And Dresses To Discuss

(NEW YORK) The celebs may be grappling with those hangovers following the 71st Annual Golden Globes, but obviously, The Daily is on dress duty. While others were live tweeting every last deet from the evening (that strange seating plan, Jacqueline Bisset’s bizarre speech, and Martha Stewart’s cough drop commercial), we were busy analyzing hemlines and karat counting. And thus, we present you with a thorough analysis of the Globes' tapis rouge.
Hostesses With The Most: While the stars at the Beverly Hilton Hotel were provided with bottles upon bottles of booze, at home we had to make do with the on-screen action for entertainment. Luckily, the comedienne duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took their hosting duties very seriously. However, their fashion choices were no laughing matter: on the carpet and on the stage they donned Carolina Herrera and Stella McCartney, respectively. Poehler momentarily broke from her Stella streak for a Ted Baker suit, when she debuted Randy, also known as Mr. Golden Globe. But seriously, has Fey’s hair ever looked better?
Red All Over: J'adore Taylor Swift’s elegant cherry red Carolina Herrera gown, replete with a black bust and thoughtful draping. Also playing the colorblocking game? Amy Adams, who accepted her statue for American Hustle in a doubly rouge-hued Valentino gown with a daring low neckline and a flowing train. In a daring twist of events, Emma Watson paired a red Dior Couture gown with a pair of slim black trou, which were on show through the frock's completely open back. Cue the heated discussion on whether Watson was a touch too casual for the black tie eve.
Can’t Go Wrong With B&W: With a nod to Sharon Stone at the 1998 Oscars, Julia Roberts paired a mermaid Dolce & Gabbana gown with a crisp white button down, accessorizing with a blingy waist cincher and a beehive ‘do. Jennifer Lawrence donned a slightly poufy Dior Couture gown, banded with black elastic detailing and aptly accessorized with black onyx and tons of diamonds from Neil Lane. Some other honorable mentions that stayed out of the gray: Hayden Panettiere in Tom Ford, Zosia Mamet in Reem Acra, Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Roberto Cavalli, and Emilia Clarke in Proenza Schouler.
Bling, Baby: The Wolf Of Wall Street star Margot Robbie was sultry in a Gucci gown, trimmed with green and white sparklers. Her best accessory? That thigh-high slit. Oscar de la Renta dressed both Zooey Deschanel and Michelle Dockery in visions of bling. Deschanel paired an embellished crop top with a tulle skirt, while Dockery was in a sculptural strapless gown with a peek-a-boo cutout to show off her shoes. Kate Mara did J. Mendel proud in a slithery silver gown, which paired well with her new blonde locks.
NYFW Staples Go All Hollywood: Prabal Gurung has gone bi-coastal, and he’s found a welcome home on the red carpet! Last night Sandra Bullock donned a sleek black silk gown by the designer, which featured a pastel pink V in in the front and a thick asymmetrical baby blue hem. Gurung dressed Zoe Saldana in the same color palette, replacing the blue with a sheer pink insert, sparkly paillettes and a shark fin neckline. Thakoon took another spin with Taylor Schilling, this time putting her in a green gown, draped and lacey, which came together in a delightfully understated manner.
Playing Favorites: Lupita Nyong’o absolutely stole the show in a red strapless Ralph Lauren gown, complete with a cape and matching red shoes. The 12 Years A Slave actress has been dominating the best dressed lists since the film's premiere, and we expect nothing less of her at the Oscars in a few weeks. Cate Blanchett was a vision in a lace cap-sleeved Armani Privé gown. The dress’s high neckline was offset by a shockingly low back and a perfect fit. Rocking the baby bump this time around: Kerry Washington, who clasped her white Balenciaga at the bust with a sparkly Fred Leighton brooch.
Green With Envy: Also making the baby bump look downright glamorous? Olivia Wilde. Her sparkling emerald green Gucci column gown came complete with long sleeves, and on the coif front, she went with no-fuss beachy waves. Helen Mirren, always age apropos, looked positively radiant in mint green Jenny Packham, ruched and decorated with blue sparkles. Reese Witherspoon opted for a dose of Calvin Klein minimalism, and nailed it in a turquoise halter shape.
Dapper Dudes: The tux reigned supreme last night, but a few hommes of the eve did try to impress with a touch of color. Usher opted for an oxblood Calvin Klein Collection getup, while Seth Meyers nailed his navy Valentino suit. The likes of Leonard DiCaprio in Giorgio Armani, Jared Leto in Saint Laurent, and Matthew McConaughey in Dolce & Gabbana accepted their Globes in bowties. Other bowtie-donning guys? Michael Fassbender and Bradley Cooper in Tom Ford, Orlando Bloom in Lanvin and Chris Pine in Ermenegildo Zegna Couture and TOD'S shoes.
