Valentino - Paris Couture Fall 2008
(PARIS) Alessandra Facchinetti's first couture effort at Valentino was so well-conceived that the house's reputation as one of the week's highlights was confirmed. Bad news for crashers--next season, bonne chance landing a seat. Shown at Valentino's opulent and appropriately gilded offices at 8, Place Vendôme, Facchinetti played most brilliantly with textures, folding and beading and manipulating as only a great couturier can. The collection began with a few oddities, including a bulbous white suit that looked more Balenciaga than Valentino, but it quickly rebounded with a strapless dress embroidered with wooly pearls, sequins and silver thread. A standout lead chiffon dress embroidered with perforated sequins and pearl-smoked crystal proved that Valentino is still a leading house of eveningwear.
