Monique Lhuillier - Bridal Spring 2008
(NEW YORK) A sculpture forest of wooden branches greeted guests at Lhuillier's bridal show, an appropriate backdrop for a show aptly titled "Enchanted Forest," inspired by Patrick Dougherty's works. "It was really organic this season," explained Lhuillier. "There was hardly any satin; I just felt that polished look had been really done. Instead, I used lots of chiffon, matte garza, and left edges frayed." The effect of the enchanted forest played itself out in the 3D flowers accenting a silk satin organza gown; the pearl detailing on a gathered tulle bolero; floral embroidery on bodices and skirts; and organza flowers adding a touch of rawness to the silhouette. "I also wanted the ethereal feeling to be very strong--I used lots and lots of yardage in the chiffon looks but wrapped it in a way that made it look like it was floating," said Lhuillier. And the designer received perhaps the highest praise that could be bestowed on her: A gay male audience member remarked that this collection made him want to turn straight--just so that he could marry a woman wearing one of the gowns from her collection!-
