Valentino Conquers All
(NEW YORK) It appears that interest in the life and times of Valentino Garavani isn't strictly limited to the fashion world and its observers. Matt Tyrnauer's film Valentino: The Last Emperor, just recorded the highest opening-weekend gross of any U.S. documentary in 2009. After opening on March 18 at Film Forum, the film grossed $39,106, including $21,784 for the three-day weekend. This renders the film one of the Forum's top-grossing premieres in over three decades.
Valentino: The Last Emperor continues to arrive in theaters after a seven-month festival run that kicked off at the Venice Film Festival. It went on to win Best Documentary in Chicago, and also opened the Hamptons and Miami Film Festivals. The film will open in Chicago on March 27, and Los Angeles and San Francisco on April 3. Garavani, Giancarlo Giammetti and Tyrauer will celebrate the Los Angeles opening at LACMA on April 1, hosted by the likes of Betsy Bloomingdale, Joan Collins, Lisa Eisner, Anne Hathaway, Rita Wilson and Dame Elizabeth Taylor.
