(NEW YORK) Now more than ever, the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) needs to celebrate the best of the best: the finalists for the 44th annual National Magazine Awards (nicknamed "Ellies: after the Alexander Calder stabile Elephant) were announced yesterday. Ellies favorite The New Yorker picked up the most nominations this year, with recognition in 10 categories, but GQ was close behind, with eight total nominations: General Excellence (circulation 500,000-1,000,000), reporting (the magazine picked up two nominations in this category), feature writing, profile writing, design, photography, and photo portfolio.

Condé Nast’s books got their fair share of recognition as well: W picked up three nominations (general excellence, circulation 250,000-500,000, photography, and photo portfolio), Glamour was nominated for essays, and Vanity Fair received two (public interest and profile writing), and Vogue was nominated once, for general excellence, circulation 1,000,000-2,000,000. A complete list of the nominees can be found on AMSE’s website. The 26 winners will be announced at a gala event on April 30, at New York City’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, Frederick P. Rose Hall.
