(NEW YORK) “Out of all things, fragrance is the most personal thing I create,” shared Michael Kors as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame last night during the 38th annual FiFi Awards at the Downtown Armory. Linda Wells presented the award to her longtime friend, who shows no signs of slowing even after 30 years in the industry. “Fashion is not for sissies,” the designer warned the crowd of over one thousand.
Guests munched on yellow-tomato bruschetta and indulged in designer-themed refreshments like the citrusy “YSL Cocktail.” The Pepto pink overhead lighting illuminated the popcorn centerpieces, but the honorees declined to snack during the ceremony. “Of course, I had to wear a really awkward dress to walk up these stairs,” lamented the bravely-dressed presenter Kim Kardashian as she took the stage. “But I made it!” Kardashian admitted to being “smothered in her own perfume” while presenting Best Packaging of the Year, Men’s Popular Appeal, to Yves Rocher North America Inc. for the Comme une Evidence fragrance.
Leelee Sobieski bestowed Bath & Body Works with the Retailer of the Year award. The company, which also received honors for the P.S I Love You perfume, was cheered on by a lively group of supporters. Thankfully for Usher, there were no shrieking tweens in the audience. “It’s good to be greeted by applause instead of screams!” laughed the Male Celebrity Fragrance of the Year winner. “I love being famous for being worn on the skin of so many beautiful women and fabulous gentlemen.”
As the night wore on, Estée Lauder Group President John Demsey accepted the Fragrance of the Year, Unique Boutique award on behalf of Tom Ford’s White Suede. The most enthusiastic presenter? FiFi newbie Randy Jackson. “Dude, man, I love it!" he enthused. "The dog likes to smell good!”
