Making It

(NEW YORK) When the two hardworking leads in HBO’s new show, How to Make it in America, come up with the idea to launch a denim line, the party that ensues is more of the house variety than a true fashion fête. But judging by the looks of Tuesday night’s HBO and Cinema Society screening and subsequent afterparty at the Bowery Hotel, they’ve made it. The cast—which includes Brian Greenberg, Victor Rasuk, Luis Guzman, Lake Bell, Kid Cudi, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Shannyn Sossamon, and Jason Pendergraft—were joined by the likes of Zoe Saldana, Tommy Hilfiger, Adrian Grenier, Chloe Sevigny, and scores more for the show’s debut celebration.
So, when did they realize they’d made it? “This moment right now! This is it, I now know that I've made it!” exclaimed Bell. “When I graduated from high school,” joked Guzman. “1975 was a tough time in New York!” For Thomas—who will forever be famous as the boy who scored Stifler’s mom in American Pie—the answer was a more recent occurrence. “When John Varvatos made me some clothes to wear!” he said, pointing out his ensemble and revealing that the designer himself makes an appearance in the show. “He's an actor, it's more than just a cameo--he has some scenes and stuff. I haven't seen it yet, but word was he was very excited about it and really into it. Everyone was like, ‘Varvatos is here, Varvatos is here!’”
Of course, breaking into the cutthroat world of fashion is the objective for Greenberg and Rasuk, the aforementioned leads, so Thomas also shared his personal style tips: “Go off mannequins,” he divulged. “Mannequins are usually right. Basically, the mannequin will always be better than what I try to compile on my own.” Saldana admitted that her sense of style also takes a little help. “There are people like Chloe Sevigny that have that sense of good taste and can get there on their own,” she laughed, “but for people like me, they need a village!”
