Aces Gone Wild
(NEW YORK) Fashion Week is on the horizon, but until September 9, the U.S. Open will undoubtedly be the biggest event in town. The tennis stars came in droves last night for Nike's Primetime Knockout event at Pier 54. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova stepped out for the all-star affair. Even Serena Williams who was nursing an injured foot (she's skipping Flushing this year), made an appearance! The buffet of future Hall of Famers were paired with the likes of Bar Refaeli and Bradley Cooper for doubles matches that benefited local youth tennis centers.
"I obviously don't play enough," quipped Refaeli. "But even if I did, I would still look horrible compared to these guys." Partner Nadal didn't mind the super's ghastly forehand. "As long as I'm playing with Bar we're good," he smiled. "We'll just have to prolong the points!" William provided colorful commentary from the sidelines. "You have a pretty good body, Rafa!" she decided. "Now can we see those abs?"
Sharapova comes into the Open as one of the favorites this year, and she was clearly in high spirits. "It didn't take me long to fall in love with the city," she said. "Every time I come to New York I feel like I could pretty much do anything." That's how her partner Cooper felt while smashing volley winners against Federer and John McEnroe. "And to think I didn't play tennis since like, 1975!" joked the actor. It got even better for The Hangover star. The Swiss champ personally congratulated (and hugged) Cooper in the VIP area following the match. "You really did well, Bradley," assured Federer. "You kind of surprised us!" All Cooper could do was blush with pride. "Now that was cool," quipped an awestruck Cooper.
