(NEW YORK) With the fashion flock slowly trekking back to New York post-Paris, Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Center was a reunion of sorts: Stefano Pilati arrived avec Claudia Schiffer, Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson caught up with Ginnifer Goodwin, and Stefano Tonchi, Ingrid Sischy and Patrick Demarchelier all air-kissed their way through the crowded cocktail area. Meanwhile Kanye West and Amber Rose breezed into the Metropolitan Opera House just minutes before the start of the show. YSL, of course, was the reason for the chic convergence; the house was the sponsor of the Opera’s 125th Anniversary Gala.

Despite an acclaimed collection presented in Paris last week, Pilati insisted that his Met outing was not a celebratory one. “I’m not used to celebrating anything because the moment you celebrate something, it means that you stop researching, you know?” he said. “So for me, it’s like every show I’ve done. I’ve done it as a step to take me somewhere else. I always try to elaborate on what I’ve done and move forward, so I will never celebrate.” The designer laughed, then added, “I let the others celebrate me, but I will never celebrate myself! Forget it!”

“I used to do a lot of fashion shows for Yves Saint Laurent himself, when he was still alive,” said Schiffer, the current face of YSL. “Shortly after, I met Stefano at a dinner and told him that I loved what he’d been doing at Yves Saint Laurent, and he said ‘I’m a huge fan of yours as well--why don’t we do something together?’ I just love what he does. He’s so talented.” Surely, stylish types like Mary-Kate Olsen, Becki Newton, Emily Mortimer, Claire Danes, Daphne Guinness, Brooke Shields, and Zoe Saldana agree--all turned out for the operatic occasion.

“I went over to YSL--I can’t believe I’m saying that--I went over to YSL yesterday and they had a bunch of different dresses, and when I saw green sparkles, I said, 'I have to wear that one,'” exclaimed Newton of her ensemble. “And it happens to be pants. It’s kind of amazing and comfortable.” Though it was her first time at the Opera (“I’m so excited!” she gushed), the actress came prepared. “I found a channel today that was actually showing opera. I don’t know which opera it was, but I had it on in the background while I did my makeup. That was my preparation!”

Pilati just regretted that he couldn’t personally dress the lovely ladies who turned out for the fête. “Normally I do, but it was a kind of weird timing because the show was just last week. The show is a lot of pressure!” he laughed. Of course, in true Chic Must Go On style, he had done a little something special for Schiffer, though the airlines decided it was not to be. “Stefano designed a dress for me actually but it got caught in customs!”
