(NEW YORK) The Cinema Society and Angel by Thierry Mugler hosted the American premiere of The International--and the movie with the important sounding name got the epic treatment last night to celebrate its grand debut. There were two red carpets at the screening for the likes of Spike Lee, Michael Stipe, Isla Fisher, and Lee Radziwill, a grand after-party at the Guggenheim (with nearly the entire museum open to the guests), and multiple coach buses to take guests to the bash. “I don’t really think they would let us put multiple violent bullet shots through this museum,” smiled director Tom Tykwer, while discussing film’s most pivotal and exhilarating scene. “So we recreated it on a sound stage at Berlin!”
Naomi Watts, who’s no stranger to Andrew Saffir’s events, this time held court in the middle of Guggenheim’s lobby and happily discussed her outfit. “Mugler cuts such beautiful suits, so I’m excited to actually wear one now that I lost my baby weight,” she happily announced, while attached to her close friend and manager Jason Weinberg for most of the night. And if she could live in any art mecca, where would it be? “That would be the Louvre,” said the face of Angel. “But the Guggenheim is pretty impressive, of course. Just look at it!”
Familiar faces like Amy Pascal, Bryan Lourd, Poppy Delevingne, Lorenzo Martone, Nicole Miller, Salman Rushdie, and Amanda Setton did take a tourist look while the film’s big star, Clive Owen, was a late entry. “My character is pretty passionate and hotheaded in the film,” he said when finally settling in with his cast. “He’s crazy, punching, and screaming most of the time. I don’t think I’m that ambitious in my real life. At least I pick my own suits.”
