El Museo del Barrio celebrates Dia de los Muertos
Monday, November 02, 2009

(NEW YORK) It may have been the night before Halloween, but El Museo del Barrio was still bedecked with skeletons and ghouls. The occasion? The uptown museum's annual Dia de los Muertos (or Day of the Dead) fête, which brought out late-night revelers and Museo aficianados alike. Chairs Coromoto Atencio, Michel Heredia, and Gabriel Rivera-Barraza greeted guests and committee members like Brian Reyes, Bibhu Mohapatra, Zani Gugelmann and more. The "festive" dress code meant no over-the-top costumes for partygoers (who, The Daily imagines, saved their best get-ups for the real Halloween bashes), though some added spooky touches to their looks; Christian Cota, in a full face of dark makeup, was nearly unrecognizable save for his signature slicked-back hair.

The museum's exhibits were left open during the bash, so partygoers between cocktails (no drinks in the galleries!) could browse the works--but the cultural experience didn't end there. Towards the end of the evening, three scantily-clad dancers performed, moving around the space followed by a several piece band. Cameras flashed, dancing (professional and otherwise) ensued. Only one guest seemed otherwise occupied: Tinsley Mortimer, who spent the evening surrounded by a crew of camera men. Dia de los Muertos, coming soon to a reality show near you...
