Bergdorf Goodman toasts Times photographer Bill Cunningham
Monday, September 15, 2008

(NEW YORK) New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham is an institution, riding around en velo and snapping photos of New York's chicest for his weekly features. Though he calls himself invisible, on Wednesday night, the cameras were turned on him as Bergdorf Goodman celebrated the icon with a party and exhibition of his photographs. Fans from Molly Sims and Kelly Killoren Bensimon to Stefano Tonchi and Iris Apfel came to toast the photog, who wore a camera around his neck and was snapping pictures throughout the party.

Of the thousands of photos he's taken over the years, what was his favorite? "I don't think of it that way," he said. "I just look for beautifully dressed women!" Judging by the turnout on the third floor of Bergdorf, beautiful women love him, too; Cuningham was surrounded all night by crowds of his friends and adoring fans. "Oh, I don't think of anything like that--it's something that doesn't interest me. I think it's better to be invisible, you know."

If invisibility is what got him photos of classic fashion mavens like Lynn Yaeger and Apfel, then we suppose we approve. Yaeger's photo was displayed in the windows of the department store, part of an exhibition that will be in place until September 15. So has she seen her photo? "Of course!" Yaeger exclaimed. "I love it!"
