Gucci celebrates 70 years in the Eternal City
Tuesday, July 08, 2008

(ROME) With a sketch of the Spanish Steps providing the backdrop, Gucci took to Rome's Villa Aurelia to show its Cruise 2009 collection this evening. Frida Giannini hosted a chic series of events to celebrate the brand's 70 year anniversary in the Eternal City and the reopening of the Via Condotti flagship. Claire Danes, Hugh Dancy, Goldfrapp and Lapo Elkann took in the runway show from the front row, while worldwide fashion aficionados caught the collection online at Gucci.com through a live webcast.

Translucent walls gave the tent an outdoorsy feel, with greenery providing a natural luxe backdrop. Giannini's resort collections for the house have been exceptionally strong, and this season was no exception. With minis and maxis, boho frocks, floaty dresses, tattoo prints and a color palette including black, white, orange and red, looks exuded a sense of seaside chic, perfect for the warm summer night.

It was a coming home of sorts for Giannini, who was born and raised in Rome's Gianicolo hilltop neighborhood. After receiving roaring applause, the designer joined 300 guests for a private dinner in the Villa's lush garden. Later on, the celebration continues with a performance from Goldfrapp and cocktails and dancing under the stars. Revelry is expected to continue through the night.
