A Moment With...Jeffrey Sebelia

"They told me Project Runway was career suicide."
Monday, October 23, 2006
(NEW YORK) Jaws around the country dropped last Wednesday night, as television's newest bad boy, Jeffrey Sebelia, won the third installment of Project Runway-and surprised fellow cast mates like TRESemmé's Nathaniel Hawkins. "I had no idea!" Hawkins exclaimed at the Tribeca Grand, where TRESemmé held the show's final screening. "I could have stayed on set for the judging, but I knew I wouldn't be able to keep a secret!" As part of his win, Sebelia's clothes will receive clothes a spread in Elle; also included in his grand prize is a receive a mentorship with INC International Concept Design, a year of representation by Designers Management Agency, $100,000 to start a clothing line, and a 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster, which he is selling via an online auction and donating the proceeds to the Musicians Assistance Program.

What's the strangest thing about Project Runway stardom?
The role of the Internet. I can't believe how many blogs are about Project Runway. And they're vicious.

Are viewers also nasty in person?
They're great. Too great-everyone I've met says they're a huge fan. I keep waiting for someone to throw a drink in my face. That might be fun, actually.

Do you think a reality show can launch a fashion career? Namely, yours?
I'll tell you a story. I've been trying to sell to this one boutique in Soho for three years. I asked the store if I should go on Project Runway and they told me Project Runway was career suicide. And I was like, then buy my f***ing collection so I don't have to go on TV!

Did they buy it?
Not yet. But I'm a good designer! You're buying great clothes from me. So what's wrong with getting my name out there? I'm not taking an opportunity away from anyone by being talented and also on TV. Other young designers will succeed too-there's a lot of dough in the world.

One of your judges, Nina Garcia, said that normal people root for your fellow competitor Michael Knight, but that fashion people root for you.
That's one of the best compliments I've ever gotten. Seriously awesome.

What's the best thing about the Project Runway finale?
I don't have to keep the ending a secret anymore. It was f***ing hard!
