The Condé Cuts Continue
Wednesday, October 07, 2009
(PARIS) Every Condé Nast editor has been tasked with reducing his or her budget by 25%, and the corporate powers that be require the plan to be completed by this Friday. Even before the publishing giant's shocking closures, which were announced on Monday, the atmosphere in Paris (at least in the American sections of the shows) has been uncharacteristically grim. The absence of top types like Julie Gilhart, Cecilia Dean and Joanna Coles has been felt; Anna Wintour has not been spotted since Dior on Friday. Now, the hours between shows are filled with a dizzying amount of budget-related conference calls and team meetings. Some editors in chief have missed much of the week in order to both save budget and deal with the pressing tasks at hand--namely, layoffs. Department heads are tasked with making decisions on how to make their numbers within the next two days so changes can be implemented quickly. Some Condé titles expect to experience layoffs as early as this Friday.ASHLEY BAKER
