Barneys' Historic Move
(NEW YORK) In addition to the upcoming appointment of a new CEO, Barneys may have something else new up its sleeve: a new store to be built in a landmarked building in the meatpacking district. The exact location has yet to be confirmed, but sources have indicated to The Daily that the location will likely be at 402 W. 13th Street, in the historic Gansevoort Market district. Plans for the 2-story building to be demolished and rebuilt as a 5-story building were approved in February of this year, and the architecture firm, Pasanella & Klein Stolzman & Berg, Architects, lists the building as a commercial project on their website, complete with a concept image of a department store. According to a Landmark Preservation Committee document, the building demolition and rebuilding will not detract from the historic nature of the district; the proposed work will include terra cotta and brick front and lot line facades, and the "glazed ground floor infill, simply-designed, metal door and side panels and metal canopy will recall the open loading docks, service entrances, and canopies of warehouses and market buildings, historically found throughout the district."
Industry buzz is that the lease on Barneys' 18th Street Co-Op location is expiring soon... does this mean that store will close and business will be directed towards the meatpacking district? A Barneys rep denies the rumor.
