Bottled Up
(NEW YORK) Elle has introduced an interactive component to its third-annual May Green issue, featuring covergirl Madonna. Together with the issue's guest editor, global warming activist Laurie David, editor-in-chief Robbie Myers enlisted 15 fashionable names to conceive of a series of one-of-a-kind designer bottles utilizing containers by SIGG, the 100-year-old Swiss maker of super sleek, eco-friendly reusable aluminum beverage bottles. The results speak for themselves.
Donna Karan's Urban Zen motif bears the tag line "Raise Awareness Inspire Change," while activist Kenneth Cole's bottle reads, "Is it me, or is it warm in here?" Sisters Sienna and Savannah Miller, proprietors behind the label Twenty 8 Twelve, chose a simple flowers-and-sun motif, Peter Som offered up his signature sketches, while Anna Sui's black bottle features a version of her Dolly Girl character. Other designers that contributed works include Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Michael Kors, Philip Lim, Tommy Hilfiger, Brian Reyes, and Chris Benz. A look at all 15 designs is available at Elle.com.
As David points out in the issue, every year Americans toss more than 20 billion empty plastic bottles into landfills. Surely, these unique creations, which will be auctioned off at Elle.com/auction starting April 14 at 7 p.m. for 10 days--with proceeds benefiting David's organization, StopGlobalWarming.org--won't meet similar fates.
