Your Ultimate Front Row Top 10!
(NEW YORK) It's finally over. And during this very weird fashion season marred by a general economic phobia, celebrities sure didn't stay away. Thank you Charlize, Leighton, Mick, Gwyneth, Liv, Freida, and Rihanna (just to name very few)! The usual runway super addicts like Zoe Saldana and Sophia Bush restrained themselves to few select events this go-around and our buddy Kanye West didn't go to a SINGLE show in all four cities, despite flying to Milan for amfAR. Yes, it's a new a brand new game out, there filled with immortal pop stars, porn stars, bloggers, and Grand Slam demigods. This is our definitive list of the 10 front row moments that put some much needed adrenaline into our weary, traveling blood streams.
VALENTINE UHOVSKI
1) Prince
Where: YSL, Chanel, and John Galliano
Why: We don't even know, except that he's PRINCE and you're not. What we do know is that he didn't pose for pictures with any of the designers and refused all interviews, but he did bring some pretty protégé named Bria Valente with him. He also made his seatmates at YSL, like Stephen Gan and Robbie Myers, look like nervous and excited sixth-graders.
2) Lady Gaga and Madonna
Where: Marc Jacobs
Why: Before the recent SNL pop star union, there was Marc. We knew all along Jacobs was on wonderful terms with both, but no one was sure whether they'd be important enough to him to break his no-celebrity clause from last season. Of course they were. But this photo op almost didn't happen. Lady was Lorenzo Martone's date, and they arrived 40 seconds late--meaning that they had to experience the stunning effort without Madge and Jesus. "My heart was beating so fast I couldn't believe it," Gaga told us right afterwards.
3) Roger Federer
Where: Giorgio Armani, Prada, and Versace
Why: We were used to seeing Roger way back when in New York at Oscar or Marc. In the past, he would casually win the U.S. Open and accompany his wife Mirka and Anna Wintour to shows. This was his first European experience, and it delighted tennis mad fans in Milan (and us), even with his two permanent body guards firmly in front of the Swiss. "Milan is a short ride from Zurich," Federer told us at Prada. "So, it's a nice little mental break. And I'm learning from Anna along the way."
4) Mickey Rourke
Where: Max Azria
Why: "Because Max is short, French, and he has a pretty hot wife!" Mickey, in his own words, to The Daily. How can you beat that?
5) Janet Jackson
Where: Ralph Lauren, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, and Gaultier
Why: Miss Jackson had an entourage of about six on her three-city journey, and she still made everyone gasp with excitement whenever she made a cameo. But her favorite show might have been Donatella's. "She's just this amazing, motherly, wonderful woman," she told us over pasta at the brand's dinner. Janet even wore Versace to the amfAR event she hosted later in the week.
6) Alexander Wang
Where: Altuzarra and Valentino
Why: Designers at other designers' fashion shows are not a new phenomenon. A few of our favorite moments this season included Jason Wu at Band of Outsiders, Peter Dundas at Celine, DvF at Alexander Wang and Rodarte, Rachel Roy at Chado Ralph Rucci, and Silvia Venturini Fendi at Vuitton, Chanel, Valentino, and Giambattista Valli. But Wang took the cake for two reasons. He caught the Valentino show in the midst of his Paris appointments, and he sprinted to Altuzarra seconds after finishing the press at his own show. He saw Joseph's work standing, but didn't miss the first look!
7) Ron Jeremy
Where: Tadashi Shoji
Why: Because it almost topped Ashley Dupre at Yigal last season in the total and utter randomness category. His own explanation? "Libby from VH1.com brought me here," he told us. "I love seeing these marvelous outfits that I'll never be able to wear unless I lose 100 pounds." Never mind that this was a womenswear show.
8) Joan Collins
Where: Christopher Kane
Why: Because she almost got as many flashbulbs as Versace a few seats away. And did you ever think a day would come when a cast member of Dynasty would make it to this nice little show? Well, Miss Collins is back in New York. In fact, we spotted her at Michael's yesterday.
9) Bryan Boy, Tommy Ton, Garance Doré and Scott Schuman
Where: D&G and Dolce & Gabbana
Why: The ingenious Italian Dolce PR team contacted all four bloggers and kindly invited them to two shows. What the guests DIDN'T know is that they'd be seated front and center. And that laptops would, along with little desks, be at their seats. At Dolce & Gabbana, Schuman refused his PC while Bryan Boy was seated in between Sally Singer and Michael Roberts. "I was shaking inside," he told us. "I barely remembered how to use my computer in front of me and I temporarily lost my sense of speech! But it was one of the greatest moments in my life." Later that night, another of his dreams came true after The Daily introduced him to Versace during dinner.
10) Giancarlo Giametti
Where: DvF
Why: We've seen Mr. Giametti at shows for 40 years. But that was all at Valentino, and before the wonderful documentary that we all got to see. So at DvF, Giametti was a movie star who sat next to Graydon Carter and posed for fan pictures. "Diane kindly invited me," he explained to us. "How can you refuse HER?"
