Resort 2013: Oscar de la Renta
(NEW YORK) Oscar de la Renta
With an expanding troupe of young designers chasing the edgier, under-30 set, it's a refreshing change to see the hip crowd tempted with something other than a slouchy tee and leather what have you. This season, Oscar de la Renta did more than tempt with his Resort 2013 runway show, gently infusing a street-chic angle into his ladylike ethos—something the designer has been flirting with for a few seasons now. Sure, there were Oscar trademarks in spades: embellished evening gowns, tweed lace skirt suits, and demure floral sheaths. But the designer balanced his Park Avenue fare with punky gingham pantsuits, if-you've-got-it-flaunt-it shorties, taffeta button-downs peeking out underneath lace knits, and neon hair streaks—all in a successful attempt to nudge his lunching ladies across the uptown-downtown divide. While this may seem like an eclectic grab bag of trends du moment, de la Renta unified the 57-look lineup with a vibrant color palette consisting of pacific blue, carnation, evergreen, and the classic black and white combo. Overall the collection seemed like a crowd-pleaser for buyers and editors alike, but it was the sequined baseball shirt that gave everyone something to really talk about. Following the show, the sparkly topper popped up on Pinterest rival TheFancy.com with pre-orders priced at $2,490.
