Oscar de la Renta - Resort 2008
(NEW YORK) Oscar de la Renta’s resort offering this season was one tall, cool, tropical drink—and this pause definitely refreshed. Extravagant, fanning floor-grazers and embroidered silk caftans in splashy tangerine, eye-popping persimmon, and banana yellow provided a much-needed jolt of vitamin C in a season that often looked too demure to be having much fun on vacation. Not that this was some Carmen Miranda-esque, fruit-colored free-for-all. De la Renta and his design team made ample use of stand-by black and white, but details like bewitching ikat prints (an ever popular design print at Oscar) |page| and patent paillettes that peppered skirts and cocktail frocks—not to mention stylish oversized hats—melted all the ice from the monochrome.
Too cool for school? Definitely. But for an island jaunt, just hot enough.
But beyond the stunning sponge crepe gowns, particularly in burnt orange, and embellished cocktail numbers, prominent at Oscar this season was the wide leg pant—so much so that no less than the first four looks featured silk faille versions of his lounge look, including Jacquetta Wheeler in a navy pair with an ivory and navy silk hand-knit sweater; the exaggerated legs even made their way into a canary-hued jumpsuit. De la Renta also showed that when it comes to resort, the clothes should be just as utilitarian as they are luxe. Thus, zippered pockets and drawstrings, in particular incorporated in a tangerine patent leather sleeveless jacket, were standouts, offering a sportier take on an otherwise plush design philosophy.|page| But his Park Avenue set craving fail-safe Oscar options won’t be disappointed with the platinum printed silk knit dress, yellow shantung dress, or a taffeta embroidered tulle number in a gorgeous shade of royal blue, as refreshing as a pitcher of ice-cold water on a scorching summer day.
