First Look: Inside Moschino’s First NYC Store

by Sydney Sadick

After opening the first Moschino store under the creative direction of Jeremy Scott in Los Angeles earlier this year, the brand has just opened its second location in Manhattan’s SoHo at 73 Wooster Street. The store, which is located directly across from the former Band of Outsiders flagship, has Scott’s vibrant, colorful, and playful aesthetic written all over it. “I chose the space, oversaw the fixtures, and designed the furniture displays, so you could say I really got my hands dirty with the designs,” Scott tells The Daily. Think oversized (no joke): Larger-than-life sculptures of his bags, hats, and shoes that serve as displays (via built-in shelving); a mannequin at the back of the shoppe that nearly reaches the ceiling; and jumbo hangers are some of the shoppe’s key characteristics. “I think SoHo is one of the best retail neighborhoods in the world, so I felt that there would be no better place for Moschino to be than in the heart of it,” said Scott.

The aesthetically appealing and cartoon-like fusion is what we expected from the designer, but he truly turned the 3,703-square-foot downtown digs into a shopping emporium that is downright cool. “I wanted a space that would have a gallery vibe to it, something with high ceilings and exposed ducts,” Scott said. “The one obstacle I had was finding a space that had all of this and not all the traditional SoHo beams as I wanted an open floor plan, so I pounded when this space became available, as it fits the bill to a ‘T!'”

Stay tuned for more Scott news–the designer’s documentary “Jeremy Scott: The People’s Designer” premieres just before New York Fashion Week on September 8th, and then it hits theaters on the 18th. A refresher: The film chronicles his rise to success, from growing up in Kansas City, Missouri to becoming one of the world’s most sought-after designers. More scoop on the docu here
