Balmain - Paris Spring 2009
(PARIS) It was an embarrassment of riches at Balmain, where designer Christophe Decarnin appropriated only the best style moments of Madonna-circa-1988 into a collection that managed to render that decade almost sophisticated. Strange! Nearly every piece had more than a touch of glitz, namely in the form of crystal embellishment. Severe jackets with sculpted shoulders had a military sensibility, but it was the feisty cocktail dresses that stole the show. (They will surely get longer before retail, non?) What was once a closely-guarded secret of the French Voguettes and a daring celeb or two is destined for the majors--and by that, we mean deep-pocketed. These clothes aren't for the faint of budget. But in the Balmain world, who cares?
