Jenni Kayne - New York Spring 2010
(New York) L.A.-based designer Jenni Kayne brought an urbane edge to her California-girl aesthetic for spring with a SoHo presentation on Wednesday. Calling the collection "naïve American sportswear toughens up," Kayne showed classic, preppy basics—buttoned-up oxford shirts, breezy striped tees, and pleated shorts and pants—and paired them with elements that were certainly a bit tougher, like leather and sequins. But this collection was not about mixing and matching for Kayne: "It’s about putting things of the same fabric together, like a leather top with a leather skirt or an ottoman top with an ottoman skirt," she explained. "How you wouldn’t normally wear it, but I think it’s really new and fresh." The result? A leather bandeau paired with leather high-waisted briefs might have been a bit severe no matter the coast, but an all-sequined ensemble and a leather cropped top and pencil skirt hit the right notes, and toppers like the ubiquitous but still-chic boyfriend blazer kept things from being too matchy-matchy.
