Alexander Wang - New York Spring 2009
(NEW YORK) Alexander Wang left a composition notebook on the seat of every invited guest; perhaps he hoped they would take notes on his solidified arrival on a scene. Few opened their school supplies treat, mostly because the lesson was clear: Wang has become a successful ready-to-wear translator of the downtown archetype. “My girl hardly every changes,” assured the designer. And for his many admirers, that’s a good thing. Models paraded down the elaborately lit runway to the hypnotic beats of Missy Elliot and Jay-Z, while the rain-soaked audience seemed to dry up and warm up by the second with the sight of Wang’s signature separates, strategically-fitted Beatrice winners, minis, and pastel jackets. Former show stylist Erin Wasson was, in fact, the pioneer in a standing ovation movement following the show - perhaps because she still wanted to wear everything her best friend has served up. She certainly won’t be the only one at the admiration station.
