Richard Chai - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008
(NEW YORK) Chai’s designs have always been intricate and utilitarian, with an emphasis on the deconstructed silhouette. For spring, the palette was mainly greys and whites, with a blue anorak here and an electric blue suit and shorts there. The wide, long pants and grey jackets gave a serious minimalist feel to the clothes, but Chai added feminine details like pleated necklines and delicate racerbacks to the elongated, masculine proportions. Blue and white crêpe shirtdresses and charmeuse shifts softened the icy elegance of the zipped anoraks, bombers, and wide-leg pants. “It's not trend-driven," Chai explained of his vision. “It's more about timelessness and pure design."
