Y-3 - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008
(NEW YORK) Bold and modern, the Y-3 presentation was set in a West Chelsea industrial-looking parking garage constructed exclusively for the occasion. Designer Yohji Yamamoto loves to create solemn productions, and this time he did so with an artificial thunderstorm with showers overheard and a wet blacktop which some well-dressed guests avoided in order not to ruin their clothes. The upcoming Beijing Olympics inspired Yamamoto to use metallic colors and futuristic fabrics. The designer went back to his roots with some other influences-graphics inspired by the traditional Japanese Ninja weapon, the Falling Star, and handmade Japanese denim pieces (this collection marked the relaunch of Y-3 denim). The gold high tops were a hit with designer’s celebrity fans (Mena Suvari, Vincent Gallo), and were paired with a minimalist black skirt and white zipped coat. The show had all the classic Yamamoto and Y-3 staples-shots of bright color, stripes, and various Yamamoto interpretations of sneaker style, like the high-heeled version of the Adidas Adilette and the high-heeled mesh ankle boots.
