Rodarte - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008
(NEW YORK) Inspired by a trip designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy took to Japan, Rodarte's spring incorporated the influence of manga and the films of Yasujiro Ozu in a very imaginative way. There were some of this season's big trends-pleating, chiffon dresses, metallics, and elegant hats, but mostly the designers did their thing, which usually means focusing on the details of the craftsmanship. The swan-like dresses with elaborate silhouettes had many layers of juxtaposed fabrics, silhouettes, and patterns-chiffon and lace with floral appliqués and sequins. A huge blue satin hat paired with studded, strappy blue sandals, gold lamé gloves, a cobweb knit ombré dress, and a sweater made up an ensemble. When the girls toned down their style, as with a pair of blue satin skinny pants with a delicate blue-trim button-up shirt, or the first look of the show-a sequined, purple dress with lace details, a more wearable but still original direction emerged.
