Ralph Lauren - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2008
Ralph Lauren Spring 2008(NEW YORK) For his 40th anniversary in fashion, Lauren staged the week’s grandest show and after-party at the Central Park Conservancy. Robert De Niro, Diane Sawyer, Mayor Michael Bloomberg were just some of the many who came out to celebrate this American legend. The show included many of Lauren’s signature themes-equestrian, old Hollywood, and Anglophilia, and alternated timeless looks with modern touches. The ruffled gowns, big polka dots on demure dresses, black gloves, and elegant wide-brim hats decorated with voile were beautiful and appropriate for a career anniversary, and definitely catered to the refined Upper East Side set. Lauren made up for his indulgent, ladies-who-lunch style with fluorescent green and black trenches and coats over black leggings tucked into short black boots and worn with jockey hats and ties. The modernity of these equestrian and punk combinations represented a new direction for Lauren. The show closed with bold-colored taffeta dresses which brought the designer back to his timeless glamour and put the 400 guests in party mood before the backdrop parted to reveal a candlelit garden.
