NYFW Fall 2013: Oscar de la Renta, Michael Kors
(NEW YORK) Oscar de la Renta
We're hearing some major Oscar buzz, and it's not of the gold statue variety. On Tuesday, Oscar de la Renta gathered a packed house at his 42nd Street showroom to debut his much talked-about Fall '13 collection. On everyone's mind? The effects of that three-week in-house residency de la Renta offered to disgraced former Dior designer, John Galliano. The answer came in the form of nipped-waist jackets atop knee-grazing skirts slightly reminiscent of the iconic Dior Bar silhouette, not to mention those cloche hats pulled over darkly-shaded eyes. Sublime. Later, a stash of de la Renta staples paraded out, from a toile-print day dress to a black organza number with white floral embroidery, to the show-closing silk faille ball gown with gold bullion embroidery worn by Karlie Kloss. Galliano's temporary stint may be coming to a close, but we're guessing this is only the beginning.
Michael Kors
It's quite a week for Kors, with his stock prices reaching their highest peaks since going public and a gorgeous collection presented at Lincoln Center this morning. "Life as we know it in New York is always fast, but I think it's gotten faster and faster," Kors told The Daily after the show. "We're juggling so many devices, bags, and cups! I always feel like you have to be an athlete to live in a big city." To urbanize that sportif feel? Stir in a bit of uptown polish, Kors explained. "People living a fast life are crazy and busy; they want things that function and move. At the same time, who wants to give up indulgence, sex appeal, and luxury?" said Kors. Touché! Showing over 60 men's and women's looks, the well-paced and energetic show was filled with neon orange, taxicab yellow, and electric blue, juxtaposed with black, white, olive, and charcoal. Texturally speaking, chunky knits with a slight sheen mingled with supershiny piping, perforated sheer skirting, and structured suiting (some in mega-scaled camo). Front row guests included Michael Douglas, Hilary Swank and Zoe Saldana, and the A-listers in attendance seemed just as jazzed about Kors as the rest of us. Another Kors score!
