Runway Reviews: Derek Lam, G-Star
(NEW YORK) Derek Lam
The saga continues at Derek Lam with a Fall/Winter 2010 collection entitled “The Myth of the West.” Gone were his signature slouchy, easy pieces of yesteryear; in their place stood designs that Derek Lam described backstage as “strong, clean, defined…substantial but not heavy.” Setting the tone early, the sportswear designer corralled ultra-luxe winter coats and sent them down the snow-covered runway—everything from a caramel moleskin and black vintage leather creation to a chevron Saga Furs silver fox jacket anchored the urban cowboy collection. Capitalizing on his western inspiration, Lam accented his ensembles with fringed scarves and handbags, shoot-‘em-up leather ram’s head belts reminiscent of sheriff holsters, and gold sequined booties complete with spurs.
G-Star
In true G-Star fashion, the Hammerstein Ballroom was outfitted for more than just a runway collection. The scene: multiple runways, a lightshow, and loud bumpin’ beats. The front row famous faces: Liv Tyler, Estelle, Kelly Osbourne, John Legend, Shannon Dougherty, Terrell Owens, Mena Suvari, Peaches Geldof, Natasha Bedingfield, Agyness Deyn, and Adam Lambert. What brought some of these A-listers? Tyler, for one, is the new face of the brand, but for Estelle, it was all about the denim: "I love all their jeans," she said. "They fit my bootie perfectly!" Models starring in the Fall/Winter 2010 production got their swagger on in acid yellow toggle coats, ultramarine tights, and oversized sweaters in leprechaun green. But, what would a G-Star collection be without their trademark denim stamp? Patchwork drop-crotch jean shorts presented a wearable hipster option, edgy ponchos outlined in yellow caution tape provided some street cred, and classic denim button-ups made for a subtle layering piece.
