The Guggenheim Gives Isaac Mizrahi Full Reign Over "Peter And The Wolf"

by The Daily Front Row

(NEW YORK) Isaac Mizrahi has been narrating the children’s story Peter and the Wolf at The Guggenheim Museum for the last seven years, but this year the designer has been tapped to oversee the costumes and set design, as well as direct the whole production. The event is part of a performing arts series at the museum entitled Works & Process, which has been making artists and performance art accessible to the public for almost 30 years. This iteration of the classic re-imagines Sergei Prokofiev’s famous children’s story with conductor George Manahan and choreographer John Heginbotham

The Guggenheim’s contemporary version of the story is set in Central Park during midwinter and includes costumes for six characters, who act out the narration accompanied by an orchestra. As for the narrator, Mizrahi follows in the footsteps of the likes of Carol Channing, Boris Karloff, Alec Guinness, Elaine Stritch, and David Bowie, who have all lent their voices to the event.

But it won’t be Mizrahi’s first time in the director’s chair: His first directorial debut was for Stephen Sondheim’s operetta, A Little Night Music, which debuted at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in June of 2010. While Mizrahi will begin rehearsals on Thursday, the event will open this Saturday and run through the 15th. Tickets can be purchased online at Guggenheim.org.
