Simone Rocha Fall 2015

by Daniel Chivu

Simone Rocha revisited her muse, artist Louise Bourgeois, for her Fall collection. Rocha wrote her senior thesis on the sculptor, who is known for her giant spider sculptures that earned her the nickname “Spiderwoman”. Therefore, plenty of black looks ensued, with the models’ coifs wrapped around their necks in a frizzy, haphazard way, not unlike a spiderweb. But the chenille woven tapestry fabrics later in the show were also a reference to Bourgeois. As it turns out, the artist’s family had actually owned a tapestry factory, which inspired some of Bourgeois’ work. A few of these looks, as one might imagine, were a bit more wearable than the velvety arachnid-inspired looks.
