Spring 2012: Gucci
(MILAN) Gucci
Gucci kicked off the first leg of Milan Fashion Week with a roaring Great Gatsby-themed show at the grand Piazza Oberdan with John Legend and his main squeeze, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Christy Teigen, cuddling up front row. Gone were the seventies-ish jewel-tone chubbies and flowing Angelica Huston-esque gowns of Fall. Instead, creative director Frida Giannini sent dolled-up dames down the runway in swanky flapper-worthy separates decked out in black, white, and country club green. First, there was the daywear, long on the trouser-blazer combo and tinged with just a hint of equestrian. Hence, the high-waisted pants (unbuttoned at the ankle) or breezy harems teamed with a bevy of smart blazers—some cropped and fringed, others emblazoned with linear sparkles or exotic giraffe prints. A parade of beaded Art Deco, drop-waist dresses filled the Gucci glam quotient this season with down-to-there necklines and swinging fringe hemlines. And it wouldn't be Milano without a touch of opulent trappings. Cue the gold chokers, metallic clutches, and python peep-toe pumps.
