Matthew Williamson - Pre-Fall 2008
(NEW YORK) For his pre-fall collection, Matthew Williamson was inspired by the Ballet Russes' Indian love story, "La Bayadere," incorporating the vibrant energy and rich folk culture of Rajasthan juxtaposed against feminine elegance and the timeless romance of the ballet.
Williamson's collection of bright pieces that pop mixed with a more subdued elegance, and his deep palette was injected with flashes of fluo pink, emerald green, and electric blue; there were also softer, more muted hues of fawn, ballet slipper pink, and midnight blue.
Looks had a sense of youthful exuberance. Williamson mixed the past and present with traditional voluminous silks, chiffon and textured satin, and futuristic lacquered tweeds and metallic cottons. Cashmere added a relaxed luxury while ethereal dresses added a dose of whimsy. Military and sportswear details made an appearance with fastenings, stripes, and trimmings. Pieces were embellished with ornate embroidery, stones, and intricate beading, transforming them into statement pieces. A deco butterfly served to enliven draped column dresses, while hand-painted dancers and oversized paisley motifs kept prints unique and exciting. Simple wide trousers were paired with a green star-printed sweater for a humorous take on basics.
