Roberto Cavalli - Pre-Fall 2008
(NEW YORK) It was classic Roberto Cavalli on tap for pre-fall, with offerings of the Italian designer's signature jersey drapes, animal prints, and--for fall--an emphasis on denim and corduroy in the form of straight boot cut and wide leg pants that sat high on the waist but fell loose to the foot. A series of cocktail dresses and gowns featured large photo-printed flowers Cavalli himself shot that were both elegant and easy at once--and a nice continuation from his more austere and reserved spring collection. Tailoring was a noticeable key with this collection, where jersey didn't just fall, but was ruched in a calculated manner to be just so across the neck or on the side. This was also the case with expensive-looking fluted gold detailing that was featured on several coats. Overall, even with the in-your-face enlarged giraffe print splashed across a short, sexy beaded fringe mini, the collection was sober and refreshing, with heavier pieces like a standout brown suede coat--again, with the gold piping--as well as Cavalli's version of the new smoking jacket that featured, though in an ever-so-slight manner, shoulder padding.
