Resort 2014: Vera Wang

by The Daily Front Row

(NEW YORK) You can’t say it for all designers, but with Vera Wang you can almost see her actually wearing the pieces she creates (as is!), straight off the runway. No doubt she’s honed a signature style over her career in the industry and she was recently rewarded for it by the industry with her CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award. And indeed, Wang wore a dress almost identical to the cowl necked black evening gown in her resort collection as she accepted her award that evening. Draping, asymmetrical lines, layering, mix ‘n’ match patterns, and plenty of black (all very Vera) were on display for this season’s resort collection. But if that sounds heavy for the Resort season, the collection was anything but weighty.

Vera’s vibe was laid back and light, with separates like a blouse with oversized polka dots worn underneath a perforated patterned black vest, perfectly mismatched with a pair of pinstripe cuffed crop pants. A white sleeveless dress was topped with a sheer black wrap vest, amounting to an airy feel. Most of the collection came in greys, blacks, and whites like a sleeveless B&W striped dress worn with a floral lace apron-style overlay, but pops of color appeared in a periwinkle blue column gown that consisted of light layers like a paisley pattern short dress worn beneath a sheer check floor length layer and nipped at the waist with a black sash. Like Wang herself, this collection felt simultaneously grown up and youthful. What could be cooler?
