NYFW Spring 2014: Reem Acra, Pamella Roland, Adam Lippes, Dannijo

by The Daily Front Row

(NEW YORK) Reem Acra
When
Reem Acra told us she was designing clothes for the party girl, she forgot to mention that the girl of interest had strong roots in the Seventies. The mood was rendered rather dramatic, thanks to a black lacquered runway and a cherry red backdrop. Enrobed in slinky black dresses that featured showy details such as laces and gold Swiss dot, the drama was heightened by huge, poufy coifs that bounced with every Manolo Blahnik-clad step down the runway. The use of sheer overlay was a first for Acra, who also incorporated bold houndstooth and loud gold lamé. Acra told us that the collection “was old Hollywood with modern touches”. But the look got brought back into the 21st century with a silk bandeau, plenty of geometric cutouts, and a robust approach to mixing prints.

Pamella Roland
For a designer heralded for her red carpet designs, looking towards the Cannes film festival sounds like a pretty fitting starting point on the inspiration front.
Pamella Roland‘s Spring ’14 looks reflected a number of different elements from her trip. The first of which was color, of which the French Riviera is soaked in: Roland borrowed orange hues, sweet pinks, cheery yellow, and clear blue from the landscape. As for the the festival’s glamorous past? Roland told The Daily backstage that she “was focusing on the Sixties a lot, when they first started the red carpet.” Cocoon coats got updated when paired with wide leg pants, a blush colored dress with a shirred front and elongated back. The lots of which was topped off with beehive ‘dos gathered into low ponytails. And who could miss that jewelry? The Cannes film festival is nothing without bling, of course. Chopard provided the gems, which were nothing short of spectacular. Finally, Roland was brought down by the rainy weather during her stay in Cannes, so she threw a few raincoats into the mix, offering a stylish option to stay dry.

Adam Lippes
Housed in the penthouse of the Maritime hotel, Adam Lippes personally presented his collection to each visitor who stopped by for a visit. As it was a rather relaxed situation: five mods sporting the duds of the day congregated on the outdoor balcony, blending into the cloudy sky behind them in hues of blues, whites, greys and gold. The collection found inspiration from the Mexican low-rider culture that’s recently relocated to São Paolo, revealing updated silhouettes presented in luxe fabrics. A heavy silk leopard print in caramel adorned a blazer and a jacket. The animalistic pattern then got interpreted in an icy grey for a mid-length skirt. Also of note: A python bolero in cobalt blue and snow white. The exotic skin also came in a jet black skirt and top ensemble. Starched cottons held their own next to North African chambray, but wouldn’t hold a chance against that waterproof, long pale silk jacket. Attention ladies, your new all-weather jacket has landed! Other honorable mentions included satin striped organza pants with ankle zippers in the back and a sheer black skirt with small white leather leafy appliqués.

Dannijo
Brush up on your film classics knowledge: Dannijo’s delved into old-school flicks with their Film Noir themed spring presentation. Scantily clad models (all the better to see the jewels, right?) spent their Monday afternoon lounging on a bed and hanging out in a chic retro living room. But back to the gems. As a new twist on the sister design duo’s usual look, each piece features gems set in black metal, creating a juxtaposition between airy and dark. While the models were wearing pastel silk gowns, the gems were darker, drawing the eye directly to the chokers that encircled the models’ necks as well as the large necklaces, earrings, rings, and anklets. The hues were more subdued than the pairs’ usual loud neon shades and featured a few more delicate pendant-like pieces that contained only a bit of bling. Seeing as this is the fifth year of the bauble line, expansion is in store. Behold, their first handbag line: the teaser selection included a tan rectangular clutch with a glitzy side strap. What else can we expect from the bags? “An entire collection from day bags to night bags and cross the body bags,” the sisters told us. Stay tuned!
