Sergio Says! Weekly Musings from Marie Claire (and Beyond...)

Last week, Sergio Kletnoy's life was rife with model encounters (from Christy to Caroline!) and some interesting blasts from the past. Seems like 1998 was a big year for our dear Sergio, right-hand man-about-town to Marie Claire's Joanna Coles. Besides the über assistant's weekly music suggestions--our adventures in iTunes, Hype Machine and Mediafire downloads are so much more interesting thanks to his Brit pop-heavy obsessions!--Chic loves a juicy industry tale or two of the "This one time at Sony..." variety. Plus! Which female songstress elicited Bieber-esque reactions from the MC fashion biddies?

Saturday, 10 p.m.
Another weekend, another excuse to party. Taylor Tomasi Hill and I were off to Café Select in Soho to celebrate the birthday of our dear friend Kathryn Floyd (the one with the legs up to there). Kathryn was fashionably late—in fashion circles, that means upwards of two hours. Just sayin’—so Taylor and I spent a good hour at the bar drinking lots of Irish coffee and stuffing our faces with gruyere. Unfortunately, the DJ started playing the kind of pounding house music designed for the Snookis of the world, so Taylor and I bribed the kitchen staff with tequila shots in exchange for some classic hip-hop. Hip hop hooray!

Sunday, 4 p.m.
There’s no such thing as too much Kathryn Floyd. So, hungover and exhausted, we picked up exactly where we left off the night before. While strolling in the West Village, we decided to check out the puppies at a local pet store. I’ve always wanted one, but since my Upper East Side apartment is literally a crash pad, the puppy would probably last a week before dying of starvation. Bingo! The first celebrity sighting of the day: Caroline Murphy ogling the puppies in the back of the store. The Sports Illustrated supermodel was dressed down in white jeans and Wellies, messy hair and no make-up, yet still looked runway ready. Damn, that’s going to be one lucky dog, I thought. Kathryn and I were only a few blocks away when we had our second celeb sighting of the day. Here’s how it went down: we passed a fiery redhead. I did a double take, realizing that Haviland Morris was standing right behind me. Who the hell is that, you may ask? Hello!?!?!?! Jake’s bitchy blond girlfriend from Sixteen Candles, and the one and only Wendy Worthington from the blockbuster that never was, Who’s That Girl, starring Madge. Six degrees of separation! I couldn’t help myself, and practically accosted her on the street. “I’m a huge Madonna fan,” I told her. “I should have known,” Haviland said. Thank you for not calling the police, Haviland. Your free subscription to Marie Claire is on its way!

Monday, 12:30 p.m.
I arrived at The Lion, New York’s restaurant of the moment, for a one-on-one with Queen Latifah, who was promoting her new collection of clothing and handbags for HSN. Latifah and I go way back. It was 1998 and I was fresh out of college, working for Motown Records. Her brand new single called "Bananas" was just released, and after meeting her, I was forced by my boss to mail out 1,000 vinyl records (can you imagine?!) which I hand-stamped with a banana sticker. I relayed the story to Latifah, who had a good laugh and thanked me for all those hours of manual labor. “We better not wait another fifteen years to see each other again,” she said.  Later, I was off to the High Line Park to interview Sandra Bernhard, my all time fave comic. I’ve known Sandra for years, so this was more of catch up and a chance to ask her all the things I’d been so curious about over the years: "What was it like working on Roseanne? Why did you do the Playboy shoot?" Sandra was candid, funny (as usual) and totally game. Stay tuned next week for the link to my interview, and be sure to catch Sandra on June 8 at Town Hall in NYC in her one woman show I Love Being Me, Don’t You? A little birdie told me that Rufus Wainwright and Liza Minnelli will both appear as special guests, so this one is a must-see! My last stop that evening was at a video shoot for Cobra Starship’s new single “You Make Me Feel,” featuring a hot new rapper/singer Sabi, the stunning 23-year-old who appears on Britney Spears’ new album Femme Fetale. Sabi has an army of amazing people guiding her career, including the super famous producer, Dr. Luke (Katy Perry, Britney, Avril, P!nk...), as well as Larry Rudolph, Britney’s manager. Trust me, this girl is going places!

Tuesday, 8:45 p.m.
Checked out Bernard Fowler, musician, songwriter, producer and a longtime background singer for the Rolling Stones, who was performing at the Highline Ballroom. Fowler was electrifying, and had clearly learned his moves from the best. He swaggered, preened and owned that stage, and for more than a few moments we all felt like we were watching Mick Jagger’s alter ego, live and in the flesh. Afterwards, I dashed over to Milk Gallery to catch the exhibit of one of my all time favorite lensman, Rankin, who I’ve been following since 1998, when I first glimpsed his startling Q magazine cover of Madonna. We were introduced by Marie Claire’s Zanna Roberts Rassi. I couldn’t help it—I turned into a gushing fanboy. “The first time I saw your work was in 1998, the Madonna cover of Q magazine. It was the first time she looked like she was having fun, minus all the bells and whistles,” I told him. Rankin was clearly moved, but not as much as I was. “Madonna told me that the reason she chose me for the shoot was because my subjects always look like they’re having fun, and she wanted to have fun,” Rankin told me. It’s times like these, when I get to meet my heroes, that remind me why I have the best job in all of New York.

Wednesday, 1 p.m.
Off to Greek power-lunch hotspot Molyvos to meet JoJo, the 20-year-old R&B powerhouse. Over stuffed grape leaves and spanakopita, we talked about her recent move from Boston to L.A., her new album Jumping Trains, and her major crush on Alexander Skarsgård. After lunch, I brought her to Marie Claire’s offices to meet the staff. The interns in our fashion closet pulled a Bieber and went completely nuts when JoJo entered the room. They never make such a fuss when I come into the closet. How rude!

Thursday, 2:55 p.m.
The Boss and MC editor-at-large Abigail Pesta hosted a luncheon for the Overseas Press Club. Among the illustrious guests: Zainab Salbi, founder of Women for Women International, ProPublica president Paul Steiger, and Valerie Amos of the United Nations. But the real scene stealer was Christy Turlington Burns, there to discuss, among other things, No Woman, No Cry, her searing documentary about childbirth in third world countries, which recently aired on OWN. I was all set, eager actually, to interview the most beautiful girl in the world (my eyes still puffy from crying as I watched her doc the night before), but lunch ran late and Christy had to pick up her kids from school. I walked her out and told her she broke my heart. She promised to see me at the end of the month. It’s nice to have a supermodel owe you one.

Friday, 10:30 a.m.
Off to the Hamptons for the long Memorial Day Weekend! If you spot me around town, no autographs, please. I’m on holiday.

Chic checked in with our favorite fash blogger to see what the teenybopper was up to during Memorial Day vaca. Turns out, Tavi was doing what most high schoolers do--indulging in "bows and glitter and sickening cheesiness" by ressurecting a shrine replete with "vomit pink and Laura Palmer's Secret Diary and black swans and white swans and girl" things. The contents? Jesus Loves You stickers, an Eight ball, a Cheer badge, a bride 'n' groom cake topper, a pink Beenie Baby bear, an assortment of plastic hair clips and vintage brooches, the Judy Blume classic Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret., a Jared Leto ring, a Justin Bieber concert ticket...

Naomi Campbell is furious with Cadbury! She's considering taking legal action after the company used her name to promote its Bliss chocolate bar. The ad reads, "Move over Naomi, there's a new diva in town," with a mound of diamonds surrounding the box of candy. In a statement, Campbell told the UK's Independent: "I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful." Cadbury's parent company Kraft Foods said posters with the ad have been removed and there are no plans to continue the campaign. A statement read: "It was certainly never our intention to cause any offense and the campaign itself is a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss."

Hell on Heels! With Sasha Charnin Morrison

Shoes! Shoes! Shoes! Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!

Are all shoes created equal? Not according to UsWeekly fashion director Sasha Charnin Morrisonwho shares what happens when she skips the heels. Check the Gallery for photographic evidence!

"When I wear my Miu Miu's, like I did today, doors open, doormen clap like seals when they see me coming, salespeople say nice things, and the general admiration comes in spades. But when I pair the J.Crew ballerinas with the same look...crickets. Doors don't open, general silence, overwhelming neglect. The power of a very femme high heel is amazing. How little the rose gold ballerinas get in return!"
