Los Angeles appreciation day Los Angeles appreciation day

We all know that Los Angeles gets a bad wrap, but in their latest column for Chic, stylists Emily Current and Meritt Elliott have come up with five reasons to appreciate life.

Dearest Lovely Los Angeles,

You are notorious for aggregating some of the most beautiful people in the world. However, we would like to tip our spring colored hats to 5 other beauteous things this sunny city has to offer right now.

1. An abundance of luscious, purple trees. If you spend as much time in your cars as we do, you can’t help but notice the sprinkle of purple delight all over the streets and the roofs of our cars. Jacaranda trees helps harken spring to us Los Angeles folk, and pepper our roadways will breathtaking, violet flowering trees.

2. BEAUTY CULTURE at The Annenberg Space for PhotographyThis epic exhibition presents both traditional and unconventional definitions of beauty, “challenging stereotypes of gender, race and age." Come explore and examine pieces from over 100 world-renowned beauty, fashion and fine art photographers.  The digital gallery also shows a short documentary film that further explores the print exhibition’s themes, with interviews with well-known artists, models, historians and beauty experts.

3. The pastry counter at The Larder at Tavern in BrentwoodWe don’t know what we love more- gazing at the perfectly crafted pastries at Tavern, or savoring their pain au chocolat or monkey bread. It sweetly reminds of the famous Bouchon Bakeries, with a presentation of colorful macaroons and fresh braided breads, with a taste and experience that is even sweeter.

4. The symphony at the Hollywood Bowl. There's no way to describe the classical series, led by famed Gustavo Dudamel, other than beautiful. It is absolutely brilliant to watch a peaceful, swaying crowd soak up these magical performances. You can so easily be taken by this beautiful experience; you may just forget you are a stone's throw from the 101 traffic or the madness of Hollywood and Highland.

5. A really pretty walk: Our favorite exercise- slash- escape is a power hike through Griffith Park. Leave your car at the Griffith Observatory and head north of the parking lot to the mount Hollywood hiking trail. On a clear day, you can see the Hollywood sign in all its glory, the proud skyscrapers of downtown and century city, the ocean, and sometimes the Channel Islands. It’s an awe-inspiring form of exercise.

With love and style, your beauty boasters,

EMILY + MERITT

The Princess Bride

British singer Lily Allen got married last weekend and wore not just one, but two wedding dresses on her "special" day. For the actual wedding, Lily went with a vintage-inspired Delphine Manivet dress, but yesterday, Chanel posted a pic of the new bride on their website in a gown designed by Karl Lagerfeld. Excusez-moi? Allen revealed on Twitter that she wore the Chanel to her reception. Does anyone else find that utterly depressing?

It was all a Dream (Downtown)

Leo, incognito? Fail! Leo, incognito? Fail!

On Wednesday night, a model-saturated flood of nightowls hit Chelsea for the opening of Dream Downtown, that new hotel from nightlife heavyweights Sant and Vikram Chatwal, plus Tao Strategic Group. With the Gansevoort, the Standard, and SoHo House in walking distance (even when teetering in heels, as is often the case in this club-happy area) and the Maritime Hotel as its similarly porthole-windowed neighbor, Dream Downtown debuted with bold, kinda-South Beach-esque flair. There were lots of places to play--provided you could wrangle your way past the ropes, bustling in every direction with throngs of party people--at the latest hotel where sleep isn't really the operative when booking a stay. The rooftop PH-D lounge with unobstructed skyline vistas, the Beach at Dream Downtown pool onon the second floor plus a wood-panelled, sunken lobby bottle service lounge den right below the pool (you can watch people swim over your head, literally, as you refill your vodka soda!) offer ample spots to soiree. But don't take Chic's word for it. Just ask Leo DiCaprio, who ducked in just before midnight in an unsuccessful attempt at a subtle entrance: mid-phone call, with a baseball hat, brim tilted low. Leo, some of us are just destined for loud arrivals, whether we want to or not. Embrace it, darling!

In honor of Father's Day this weekend (We sent our card! Did you!?), our peeps at Refinery 29 have compiled a list of 17 of NYC's Coolest Dads, and what pressie they'd like to get this Sunday. Who were some of the pops that made the cut? Ben Watts, Naeem Khan, Steven Alan, Carlos Souza, Rag and Bone's Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, Ernest Alexander, and Gilt Group's Tyler Thoreson. What's Johan Lindeberg hoping to get from daughter, Blue "Del Toro velvet slippers in oatmeal. Oatmeal feels like an important color right now… I like also the chic twist of a velvet slipper with my biker jacket. It makes a nice contrast." Totes!

Anna Wintour Officially Gives Her Blessing to the Internet

Anna Wintour wasn't much for words on Monday night when she picked up her People's Voice Award for Fashion at the Webby Awards on Monday, but she talked to CNN's Felicia Taylor before the show to discuss the WWW! The highlights:

Anna on the difference between print and the web: "I think what we bring to the website is really what we bring to the print version of Vogue, which is our access and our authority and very tough editing. I think the website compliments the print version of the magazine and vise versa. I think they both offer very different experiences to the reader. One is a fantastic visual experience where you look at the photography and read the articles that you can't see anywhere else. And you can carry it around with you and enjoy it for months at a time. And I think you go to the website for a very different experience — instant information, access...it's much more instantaneous, yet still edited with the Vogue eye."

Anna on The Way We Web: "I remember when we first tried to get seats for people at the shows. The internet people were put like in the twentieth row, if they were lucky, at a Chanel show. And we were told things like, you can only put five looks up because we don’t want anything to be copied. And then you fast forward to today and for whatever reason if we don’t put up a collection on the website they’re calling us up to complain. So, you know, obviously we learned with the internet explosion. I mean, we were as naïve as everyone else but we saw it grow. We saw it grow when we were at Style.com and then when we branched off onto our own website, you know, it was even more of an engrossing and interesting experience."

Anna on Style.com's page view count beating Vogue: "We launched the site in September so we’re a relatively new site. But we fully intend to get our numbers up, you know, within the next couple of years. We have access and authority and ability to connect with everybody within the industry. And, you know, whoever we call will pick up the phone."
