Burgeoning designers who've made the shortlist for the 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize are flexing their mixology muscles for a series of oh-so-chic elixirs available now at the Dorchester's swank properties in Europe's fashion capitals, including 45 Park Lane and The Dorchester in London, Hotel Principe di Savoia in Milan, and Le Meurice and Hôtel Plaza Athénée in Paris. A caffeinated highlight is the "Silent Thunderbird," filled with Maker's Mark bourbon and a dose of espresso, soaring into the Hotel Principe di Savoia thanks to the inspiration (and intrepid cocktail mixing) of Fashion Prize finalist Siki Im, an alum of Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Lang's ateliers. As for the frocks for which these designers made the Fashion Prize cut of finalists, looks by the final five—Anndra Neen, Giuletta, Julian Louie, Setareh Mohtarez, and Siki Im—will be on display at the Principe Bar in the Dorchester's Milan outpost through October 5. Other delectable drinkables borne out of these designer-bar manager collabs? The Hôtel Plaza Athénée concocted the “Anndra Neen Ruby,” a vibrant scarlet sipper containing mezcal as a nod to the Mexican heritage of co-designers' Phoebe and Annette Stephens. In the name of future fashion greats, get tippling!

Our globe-trotting columnist, Rebecca Minkoff, begins her stay-cation this week with her all-time favorite New York haunts in Midtown!
As I enter the final leg on the final stretch of my pregnancy, I’m feeling a little cooped up. Per the doc’s orders, I’m no longer able to travel, which goes against my DNA. But this bird needs to fly! To top it all off, Fashion Week is upon us and I really want to enter this historically stressful time feeling refreshed and revitalized (especially since I have to deliver a child immediately after!). So without further adieu, this week commences my “Stay-cation Series” where I jump in and feed my travel bug right here in our glorious city. For round 1, I’m giving you the skinny on the Columbus Circle/Midtown West neighborhood in honor of New York Fashion Week’s takeover.
Many NY’ers swear by what Midtown has to offer to its visitors and residents but I’m a downtown girl through and through so this world remains a bit of a mystery to me. One thing that’s immediately evident is that Midtown has that “je ne sais qoui” Manhattan vibe in spades; screeching cabs, gleaming sky scrapers, hordes of people and plenty of touristy shops. Luckily, there is little downtown feeling hideaway right on Columbus Circle, Thompson Hotel’s freshly renovated 6 Columbus, which served as my base camp for this leg of my Stay-cation Series. The Kiehl’s bath products, the stunning views of the stunningly majestic Central Park, the steam shower, the fireplace, the décor (all in my Penthouse room) all came together to provide respite from the bustling midtown madness below. Plus, the staff passed their course on customer service with flying colors.
After settling into my penthouse suite, I felt like grabbing lunch somewhere decadent, somewhere delicious, somewhere to really put me in the Midtown state of mind. Luckily, I anticipated this and made reservations at Per Se, Thomas Keller’s culinary masterpiece located in the Time Warner center. The supreme reputation of this institution alone is reason enough to enjoy a long, lazy, lovely lunch at Per Se. Luckily, the view and the pitch perfect food tips a Per Se experience over the top and secures it as one of the top meals you’ll ever have in your life. When you walk in the door, you are put at ease and ushered to your table to begin your dining experience (it really is an experience). Take a second to soak in the view over Columbus Circle, Central Park South and the park itself and then pick your jaw up off of the floor and order your food. If you haven’t been here before, you can thank me later.
Maybe it’s the fact that I’m 9 months pregnant or maybe it was the dazzling lunch I indulged in, but I felt like going for a stroll, plus I’d been staring at Central Park all day so I wanted to get up in that! Central Park has to be one of my favorite places in the entire world. One minute you’re in the thick of the city and the next you’re surrounded by beautifully well designed and well-manicured nature in the heart of NYC. It just does something therapeutic for me plus the people watching is amayz-fest!
From there, I opt to take a long nap before heading up to Lincoln Center to culturally enrich myself and experience one of the best Summer time to-do’s in NYC; The Metropolitan Opera’s Summer HD series. The Met opera sets up roughly 2,800 folding chairs in the courtyard of Lincoln Center and an enormous TV screen to show a series of classic and beautiful pieces throughout the summer. Sitting there, surrounded by the Manhattan Skyline and the stunning architecture of Lincoln, the big apple has never tasted sweeter.
For dinner, I feel like staying close to my penthouse and luckily 6 Columbus has me covered. I hop onto the elevator and head downstairs to Blue Ribbon Sushi right in the lobby of the hotel. The small-ish entrance opens up to the absolutely lovely restaurant with a long sushi bar, lots of tables and cozy booths. I ordered the oxtail fried rice and it knocked my socks off! SO delish. My dining partner had a shrimp tempura roll that looked flawless and so yummy and some “Live unpasteurized” sake which sounds super chic and was also delicious,, apparently. I stuck to tea due to the fact that I’m currently with baby, but next time, I’m trying the sake! Let’s be honest though, even if the food sucked the location was spot on for this stay-cationer. Next week, the “Stay-cation Series” charges on as I take on the Financial District!
