Just Because: Our Stylist on Alf

Comments | | Print

Where is Alf's place in fashion history? Don't waste another sleepless night wondering. Our stylist Derek Warburton of Derek Loves Shopping takes on Melmac's most famous resident.

"Alf needs a little manscaping. I don't know if this was a fur coat that I'd exactly buy. I'd like to see the bottom of his foot to see if it's red like a Louboutin. He could really use some new teeth. It's time for caps. Two really don't cut it. And he definitely doesn't need Latisse."

Get Cooking With Samantha Harris

Happy Holidays! Happy Holidays!

Yummy! Host turned DL1961 jean designer Samantha Harris shares her favorite recipe for Hanukkah Star Cookies on the first day of the festival of lights.

“This recipe is so special to me because I started a new family holiday tradition with my now 4-year-old daughter, Josselyn, to make Hanukkah cookies together. We make the dough, bake then ice them and finally 'paint' the cookies of all different holiday shapes. I love to see her artistic use of color and her creativity come to life through the bonding of baking!” – Samantha

 INGREDIENTS

For the Cookies:

1 stick unsalted butter

1 cup sugar

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Icing:

2 cups powdered sugar

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon water

A Variety of food coloring to "paint" cookies with after frosted (ex: blue, yellow, pink, red, orange - whatever you like!)

DIRECTIONS: TO MAKE THE COOKIES: With an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar in a large bowl. Beat in the egg. Add the vanilla extract and mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder, and salt in another bowl. Add to the creamed mixture and stir until smooth. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Divide the dough into 2 or 3 portions. On a generously floured board, roll out each portion 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes using flour-dipped 3-inch cookie cutters and place cookies on ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, or until edges are lightly browned. Let cool on a rack.

TO MAKE THE ICING: Blend the sugar, lemon juice, and water in a bowl. Add more water if needed to thin icing. With a small spatula, spread the white icing evenly over the cooled cookies.  Once hardened, use a paint brush to dip brush in food coloring and decorate "paint" away!  Yields about 40 cookies. Enjoy!!!!  Happy Chanukah!

Mission accomplished! (We know that's totally cheesy, but couldn't resist!) Katie Holmes avec Tom Cruise hit the Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol premiere last night in New York looking lovely in Holmes & Yang. Yup, that's her collection with business partner and pal Jeanne Yang. Nicely done, Mrs. Cruise.

Heaven! We normally let other outlets cover Kate Middleton and her every move, but today we can't resist. The Duchess of Cambridge looked absolutely radiant in a strapless Alexander McQueen last night at the annual Sun Military Awards "A Night Of Heroes" in London. We're thinking Kate and the McQueen label seem to be working out for each other, non?

We reported a few weeks ago on Claridge's Christmas tree designed by Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, and now they've made an adorable video that shows the creation of the whimsical tree and its marionettes coming to life in the hotel lobby. It's the wackiest vid we've seen in some time.
