Springtime might be all about spending time outdoors and revamping your wardrobe with a few floral pieces, but it’s also all about the ballet. And this season, the balletic inspiration goes far beyond pink tutus and lace-up pointe shoes; for the 50th Anniversary of The New York City Ballet, Derek Lam and jeweler Jamie Wolf joined forces to create a sparkly ballet-inspired line of jewelry. The two-tone collection, which was unveiled with a grand soiree last night at Lam’s Madison Avenue shop, was inspired by George Balanchine, the iconic choreographer and co-founder of the NYC Ballet. Titled Black and White, the pieces in the bauble collection are as fluid and languid as a seasoned dancer, and brought out the likes of Brad Goreski, Eric Wilson, Roopal Patel, Emily Holt, Julie Macklowe, and a slew of NYC Ballet dancers to celebrate. All in all, the evening reflected the elegance and sophistication of the collection; it was right on pointe.

"The Ruffian road show must go on, so, after glamming it up in Hotlanta, we were ready to dive into the deep south and experience some seriously spicy Cajun culture. With our collection in tow, we set course for The Big Easy in our Lexus 450RX H Ruffian mobile. Nothing says French drama like New Orleans, and if there is one thing we Ruffians specialize in, its drame français. Arriving in the French Quarter is to be transported into another time; the sights, smells, and beautiful architecture made us understand the deep roots of this historically and aesthetically significant city.
After checking into our beautiful suite at The W Hotel, we headed to Saint Louis Cathedral. Overlooking Jackson Square in all its pink full bloom bougainvillea glory, the Cathedral-Basilica was built by the King of France in 1720 and is the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States. But duty called, and so on a wing and a prayer we headed back to the hotel for a panel conversation with The New Orleans Chapter of Fashion Group international led by moderator Tracee Dundas. After some serious Q&A with our inquisitive and fashion-forward audience, we headed down to dinner at Sobou one of the hottest and most inspired of all nouvelle Cajun eateries. Created by the family which also owns The Commanders Palace, a New Orleans culinary institution, Sobu’s new take on old-time recipes breathes exciting youth into the classical eating traditions of the South. The piece de la resistance was Duck Confit for two served on top of Boudin, drizzled with Foie Gras Fondue, and topped with brandied cherries and coffee ganache. That evening we took it to the streets, went to some of our favorite bars in the quarter, and blew off some Southern Steam!
The next morning, after breakfast in the courtyard, we departed for some of our favorite Nola haunts. Bourbon French Parfums is the best-kept secret in the South. Operating from the French Quarter for over 170 years, this old school perfumery creates bespoke fragrances in under an hour. For those not wanting to wait, we suggest the classic collection of intoxicating scents created by the stores founder August Doussan in 1843, which are known to be elixirs of love. Other stops along our stroll included Oh Vintage Couture Inc, which specializes in traditional vintage New Orleans Mardi Gras Gowns, The Ursuline Convent, located next door to the Jolie-Pit Residence, and, our last stop, Café du Monde, where we indulged in Beignets and Café Au lait. Back at the hotel, we freshened up, splashed on some of our new cologne, and strolled out to our favorite New Orleans dive, the legendary Port of Call. There, we bid adieu to this resilient city while sipping monsoons with the locals and devouring the best burgers in town.
The next morning, we navigated through the swampland en route for Austin, Texas, the live music capital of the world. After years of hearing about this mecca for youth culture, we were anxious to check it out for ourselves. As we pulled up to The W Austin, the hipness of the city began to unfold before our eyes. W Insider Caleb Campaigne escorted us through the postmodern Texan industrial lobby filled with incredible photography of musicians who had performed at The Austin City Limits, the longest running music TV show in the city that shoots adjacent to the hotel. Our corner suite had sweeping views of the beautiful Lady Bird lake, the idyllic body of water that separates the more tony Austin from hipster East Austin. Champagne, candy and charcuterie awaited us, and the deep soaking tub overlooking the city was the perfect antidote to our long day of travel. After settling in, Caleb escorted us to La Condesa, the very sophisticated Tex- Mex restaurant just a stone's throw from the Hotel. He also arranged a reservation for us following dinner at Midnight Cowboy Modeling, the cocktail club where the who’s who of Austin go to speakeasy in the utmost of privacy.
The next morning, as difficult as it was to leave our suite, we headed out to South Congress Street, the vintage-shopping mecca of the city. Whether you want a 1976 Harley Davidson T shirt, a custom pair of cowboy boots, or amazing furniture with or sans provenance, this should be your first stop. Even more exciting than the items one could purchase were the people one could peruse. Never had we seen such an incredibly attractive group of beautiful young things as in Austin. Being from the mecca of hipsterdom (Williamsburg), we were floored by the personal style of young Austinites. Inspired by the haute coiffure style of the ruggedly handsome men of Austin, we headed to Bird Barbershop for a quick trim before lunching at Guero, a casual taqueria in the center of the hood. Time flew by, and we needed to head back to the hotel for the Insider Event W graciously hosted for us at Trace, the farm-to-table restaurant located on the lower level of the Hotel. So, without further ado, we headed to our room for a quick change into our dinner jackets and zipped downstairs, where a display of Ruffian clothing, sketches, and nail polish has been artfully arranged before a robust crowd anxious to ask questions, sip cocktails and watch our fashion show projected as a backdrop. That evening, following our lovely cocktail party, we sat down at a banquette with our dear friend Kate Kittredge, a recent transplant form Williamsburg to Austin, and Jill Bradshaw, owner of Friends and Neighbors, the bungalow inspired concept store that is taking East Austin by storm. We all enjoyed a delectable meal before we floated back up to our room and drifted to sleep to dreams of the excitement of this great city filled with kind, creative people.

Sofia Coppola is guest-editing a special issue of W with her former leading lady, Kirsten Dunst, on the cover. Coppola snagged Juergen Teller to shoot the star, who Coppola directed in The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette, and also got a look at the creative spaces of Miucca Prada, Gus Van Sant, and Cindy Sherman. She also enlisted her pal Marc Jacobs to open the doors to his new home in New York. The issue, festooned with the cover line "Summer Pleasures", will be poly-bagged with W's May issue, which comes out on April 21st.

Apparently someone was happy to be named on The Hollywood Reporter's 35 most powerful people in New York media list this year. Anna Wintour, who obviously made the list, attended their party at the Pool Room at The Four Seasons last night in Manhattan to celebrate. Anna was joined by chicsters like Nicole Miller, Jenna Lyons, Zac Posen, Harvey Weinstein, Martha Stewart, Thom Browne, Cynthia Rowley, Susan Lucci, and Alan Thicke at the party. Loving the red, AW!

HEARD: Carine Roitfeld could be a strong contender to succeed Joe Zee as creative director at ELLE. Roitfeld is currently a brilliant editor-in-chief of her own glossy, CR Fashion Book, and she’s vastly respected on the fashion circuit. Her role at ELLE would be similar to what her close pal Stephen Gan does as creative director at Harper’s Bazaar.
But how would ELLE EIC Robbie Myers handle an ex editrix-in-chief in the glossy’s creative director role? Not to mention someone as universally vetted in the fashion biz as la Roitfeld. Carine already has a history with the title, thanks to a stint earlier in her career as a stylist and writer at French ELLE. Should she fill Zee’s shoes, Roitfeld’s role and brand of creativity could be similar to Gilles Bensimon’s role during his tenure at ELLE—an iconic persona with a stellar fashion pedigree.
Should the rumors become reality, Gan and Roitfeld would become even more of a powerhouse duo, at Hearst and beyond. Clearly, Hearst Magazines president David Carey—who has made all the right moves on the editorial checkerboard so far—likes Roitfeld and appointed her global fashion director at Bazaar in October 2012. What’s more, her 2013 documentary, Mademoiselle C, was very well received. With her French accent, heavy-lidded look, and supremely chic silhouette, she’d be an intriguing addition to the reality TV and pundit circuit. This would be quite the interesting move for the saucy editrix because of ELLE’s epic size and global scope and because, let’s not forget, ELLE is historically a French magazine!
As reported yesterday in this space, top gun creative Alex Gonzalez is also a very likely contender for the role, and for good reason: The visual mastermind and Hearst gem has been superb as executive artistic director at Town & Country and artistic director at Marie Claire. Another advantage is that Gonzalez would seem more compatible to Myers, who lost her creative director and two art directors in past months, than Roitfeld. However, he’s got the intriguing disadvantage of being a couple with his Vogue counterpart, Raul Martinez. That James Carville-Mary Matalin dynamic was sexy in politics, but would it fly, when Anna Wintour is involved? We vote for both.

Lorde does cover duties of the May issue of Teen Vogue, and it's clear she's wise beyond her 17 years from the interview inside. "There are a lot of expectations in this industry about looking a certain way and having a certain kind of appeal," she says. "I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys' clothes too. I guess that's why I get labeled as 'the grumpy girl,' because I don't play into that." Lorde wears a red and orange plaid top from Marc by Marc Jacobs' Fall 2014 collection on the cover. The May issue of Teen Vogue hits stands on April 29th.
