Look who Chic spotted on her front row perch at Balenciaga this morning! Kristen Stewart (sans R-Patz) posed for the paps in between Anna Wintour and Charlotte Gainsbourg in head-to-toe Balenciaga that reportedly cost over $3,000. (Pocket change, darlings.) In January, the Twilight star inked a deal as the new face of the French house's forthcoming fragrance, hitting stores this fall. Smells like a winning combo!

'Gimme Shelter!' Says New York Mag

To discuss: New York mag is building out its biz with New York Design Hunting, a print spinoff of its popular weekly digital newsletter of the same name, due this May. The new title will be edited by Wendy Goodman, who currently helms the newsletter and other design-y matters at the mag. The stats: A circ of 75,000, and a price tag of $6.99 for half of those issues, while the other half will be given gratis to industry spots (showrooms, designers, and the ilk). Like the biannual sister title New York Weddings, the haute home mag will aim to hit newsstands more than once a year (pending the success of its launch issue). Why shelter, and why now? Ad pages at top titles in the category are looking plummy, as are chez-related ad sales for New York. Come May, we'll see if the buzz (and apparent appetite) for domestic chic-ifying is still going strong...

J.Crew Suits Up Tribeca (Part Deux)

Have you met J.Crew's Ludlow suit? Surely you have by now. After all, the slim-cut, subtly flattering, modestly priced getup once warranted 1,042 words in the Observer. But if that doesn't convince you of its popularity, perhaps the fact that the suiting style inspired the name of a (second) Tribeca outpost of J.Crew will. Just don't take an accidental detour to the LES en route to The Ludlow Shop at 50 Hudson Street, which opened its doors yesterday. The chic space is tricked out with the likes of a Mies van der Rohe sofa, vintage vinyl, and old-school architect's blueprint cabinets. The dapper apple doesn't fall far from the tree, either; the namesake Ludlow style debuted at the Liquor Store a couple blocks away four years ago. Also on tap at the new digs: pecial collabs on shirts, shoes, and cashmeres to gussy up that Ludlow. But really, you came for the suit, non?

End Of An Era

Justin Bieber, in YSL? Yes! Justin Bieber, in YSL? Yes!

Chic is talking about today's big, now-you're-legal birthday of the Biebs, of course. Happy 1-8 to the formerly floppy-haired teen sensation! He may or may not have stolen Chic's heart with an accidental viewing of Never Say Never on Netflix one wintry eve. Happened. Is it weird to feel slightly existential watching J.Bieber age? Can we deal with the eventual pap pic of him and Selena splitting a cig (or some Salvia)? So many pressing quandaries. Luckily, everyone else seems to be weighing in on what the Bieb's next move should be, including a jaunt into space. On the fashion front: that trademark coif is indeed missed, but hey, this snazzy YSL number and chic frames aren't too shabby. Oh, baby

Drama in Burch-land

The lacquered, logo-laden, preppified turf wars between Tory and Chris Burch, she for her eponymous line (obvi) and he for C.Wonder, nudged towards resolve with today's departure of Chris as board co-chair of his ex-wife's brand. Drama between the Burchs purportedly hit the boardroom on February 22, when Chris was booted from his post at Tory Burch (with the full, well-chronicled scoop here!). While Tory is purportedly trying to avoid the courtroom however possible, by first "asking him to change his concept, which includes C. Wonder’s product, the design and the boutique," according to Page Six's source. Quite a tall order, but not necessarily unwarranted. Stay tuned as the big bucks back-and-forth continues...

Attention designers—there's only one month to go! As previously reported, the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), FIT, and Hilldun Corp. launched Design Entrepreneurs NYC, an initiative spawned from Bloomberg's Fashion.NYC.2020 program to support emerging fashion talent in the Big Apple. Hilldun CEO Gary Wassner explains, "Fashion.NYC.2020 is a group of CEOs in and related to the fashion industry like Diane von Furstenberg, Andrew Rosen, and Gilt Groupe's Kevin Ryan. We've had a couple breakfasts together, breaking up into tables to discuss relevant fashion issues. From these discussions, six initiatives were published and Design Entrepreneurs NYC was an outgrowth of that." The result? A free "mini-MBA" program starting this summer for 35 lucky designers based in New York City. Classroom-style workshops taught by experienced FIT faculty on topics like marketing, operations, and financial management will be held through September, starting with a June 1 kickoff event. At the end of the "semester," designers who complete the program will have a chance to present their reworked business plan to a panel of industry leaders for insider feedback. But time is ticking! All applications are due by March 31, 2012.

"What it takes to build a brand these days has changed drastically by way of the internet," explains Wassner. "We need to be more organized in this industry in terms of supplying information--things like factory info and sourcing advice. Frequently, emerging brands put most of their money in product and forget about the financial side of the business. Design Entrepreneurs NYC allows them to understand how business functions behind the scenes."

To be eligible, all applicants must helm a NYC-based fashion design business that has achieved traction for at least one year through sales and/or press coverage and must be able to attend all scheduled workshops. Apply (for free!) at Design Entrepreneurs NYC.
