Who Were You Named After?
Robbie Myers: My Uncle Robert. My parents desperately wanted a boy.
Thakoon Panichgul: Nobody. Thakoon is a very rare name in Thai, actually.
Rose McGowan: An Italian duchess whose property I was born on. She hated my parents, so to return the favor, they named me after her.
Lubov Azria: My Aunt Lubov.
Marisa Berenson: Quite a few people come up to me and say, “I named my daughter after you.”
Graydon Carter: It sounds like a street name, but a relative.
Eric West, musician: I named myself! I changed my last name. It’s originally Rosa. My dad’s Spanish.
Custo Barcelona: I don’t understand the question.
Italo Zucchelli: My grandfather.
Simon Doonan: Simone de Beauvoir, and when I came out, my mother had to drop the E because I wasn’t a girl. But I am a deeply philosophical thinker myself.
Petra Nemcova: My mom was working in a store while she was pregnant with me, and a little seven-year-old girl named Petra would come shop alone, and my mom thought she was independent and strong.
Nary Manivong, NAHM: My family’s minister named my twin brother and me. My name means “the only one,” and my brother’s name, Pila, means “battery.” I definitely lucked out.
Ally Hilfiger: I don’t think I’m named after anyone, but my mom probably thought I was going to be a ballerina and thought Alexandria would be a good stage name.
Rosario Dawson: My great aunt from Puerto Rico.
Rose Byrne: It’s really boring; I think my parents had a neighbor named Rose.
Tommy Hilfiger: My grandfather, Thomas Garrety.
Zang Toi: There is only one Zang Toi in the world!
Thakoon Panichgul: Nobody. Thakoon is a very rare name in Thai, actually.
