Thursday evening at New York's Flatotel, the Threads of Color non-profit announced the launch of the Threads of Color Event, a fashion extravaganza dedicated to celebrating diversity in the fashion industry and raising scholarship funds for college students, set to take place next September. Threads of Color will present a fashion show featuring during UN Week in association with Girl Up and the United Nations Foundation. At Thursday's event, Threads of Color founder and LIM professor Ionia Dunn Lee presented LIM students Alyssa Almonte and Katrina Munroe with a 2010 Threads of Color scholarship. The organization has a number of participating designers, including Tommy Hilfiger, Carmen Marc Valvo, Anne Bowen, and Way Zen, who was present at the launch, and gave the evening’s closing remarks. “My designs are inspired by both Eastern and Western culture,” she explained, noting the lotus flower and denim fabric on her dress. “I want to inspire joy and happiness,” she said.
