What we really wanted to know last night at the CFDA New Member induction ceremony at Vera Wang’s apartment was what the new members were up to---before their current chic-ness. We asked, you dished: What was your last non-fashion job?
“Babysitting. I guess I was pretty good because all the kids are still okay, and they kept asking me to come back.”
“I never got one! But once I was a secretary for my father when he was a doctor. After that, it was all fashion. At 18, I was at Gaultier and never looked back."
“I started doing jewelry in 1983, but before that, I was Mandie's mom.”
"I was an ice-cream server when I was 16. I used to sneak ice cream in the back and I eventually got caught by my boss. I had to work longer hours."
"I used to drive a truck! The last year I did that was 1999. I did construction, plumbing---all those things."
"I was a clerk for an injury claims lawyer. I think I was done after a week!"
"I worked in a bank for a summer as an intern."
"Shooting I Am Love. I think I have those every year. With a fashion job, I control everything. But on a project like a film, I have such a small bracket of responsibility. 'Say this, do this, be there.' That's it!"
