During NYFW, Chic asked former T EIC and aspiring comedian Stefano Tonchi for his thoughts on what it takes to run the show over at the Times' style glossy. Now that Deborah Needleman has been confirmed to take over the role he once owned, Chic asked Tonchi to weigh in on the decision before the Isabel Marant show today in Paris.
How are you?
Let me interview you. What do you think of Paris? Did you go to the H&M party? Did you enjoy the fashion shower?
Next time! Last time we talked there was a vacancy at T, and now Deborah's got the gig. Thoughts?
She's a solid replacement. There was obviously a little bit of space in between us. I've always liked Deborah. I've known her for many years. She knows that market. She knew how to do the Wall Street Journal and she knows the Times company. Her husband has worked there. She knows the situation that she's getting into.
What advice would you have for her?
As I've said before, be very visual. It's important to communicate through images and not just words. I feel that she has great freedom, so she should take advantage of those first few months of her honeymoon period. They don't last.
Did you send Deborah flowers?
No, no, no. We talked in Milan a few times, but I heard the same way you did.
When you took over, you renamed it T...
T for Tonchi!
You're funny! Who would be an interesting choice as the new EIC of WSJ.?
Vanessa Friedman, the style editor from the Financial Times, is really, really talented. If she wants to work more, that would be a great job. She knows fashion well. I don't know if she has a visual background, but she could hire a great art director.
